The 9.5/10 Problem
When we started this investigation, we noticed something troubling: LifeSafe StaySafe consistently receives near-perfect scores on review sites, often 9.5/10 or higher. But where's the test data?
Perfect scores without verifiable test results are a red flag in any industry. We decided to dig deeper into the certification claims and conduct our own measurements.
Our Approach: We purchased every LifeSafe product ourselves at retail price. No free samples, no manufacturer previews of this review.
Certification Claims vs. Reality
UL Recognized Component ≠ UL Listed
LifeSafe markets its products as having "UL" certification, which is technically true — but with an important caveat. The product contains a UL Recognized Component (EX28800), meaning the formula has been evaluated by UL.
However, this is fundamentally different from being UL Listed, which means the complete, finished product has undergone comprehensive safety testing. The distinction matters:
| UL Listed | UL Recognized | |
|---|---|---|
| Complete product tested | ||
| Insurance universally accepted | Varies | |
| Ready for end use |
NTA 8133: The Lithium Battery Question
LifeSafe claims their "All-in-1" model is "certified for lithium-ion battery fires." The NTA 8133 standard is the recognized benchmark for this claim. However, we were unable to independently verify which specific LifeSafe units hold current NTA 8133 certification.
Verification Gap: There is no public database of NTA 8133 certified products. We recommend requesting certification documentation directly from LifeSafe before relying on this product for lithium battery fire protection.
Our Spray Distance Test
We measured the effective spray distance of both the 335ml and 600ml models under controlled conditions. Here's what we found:
335ml Model
4-6 ft
Effective spray distance
600ml Model
5-7 ft
Effective spray distance
For comparison, a traditional ABC extinguisher like the First Alert PRO5 achieves 15-20 feet of spray distance. This means with a LifeSafe product, you must get significantly closer to a fire to be effective.
The 360° spray feature on the 335ml model is genuinely useful — it works at any angle, which is valuable in panic situations. The 600ml model does not have this feature.
Who This Is Actually For
Despite our criticisms of the marketing claims, the LifeSafe StaySafe has legitimate use cases:
- Elderly users with arthritis: At only 600g, it's dramatically lighter than a 10-pound traditional extinguisher. One-hand operation is a genuine advantage.
- Apartment dwellers: The compact size and no-residue formula make it practical for small living spaces.
- As a secondary extinguisher: Keep one in the bedroom or car alongside your primary ABC extinguisher.
It should NOT be your only fire extinguisher if you have the physical capability to operate a larger unit. The limited spray distance and unverified certifications make it inadequate as a primary defense.
